Before installation

  • Review device compatibility and licensing
  • Identify files and settings that must be retained
  • Confirm recoverable backups
  • List applications and peripherals to reinstall

Protect the information a reinstall can affect

An operating-system installation can affect applications, settings and locally stored data. Before scheduling work, identify the files that matter, available backups and any business application that must continue to run. Include the computer model and the operating system currently installed.

Confirm compatibility, required software licenses and the method for recovering approved data. A completed installation should be checked against the agreed tasks, such as signing in, connecting to the network and opening required applications. Discuss who will supply application installers and handle access to existing accounts.

Before we get started

Tell us why the installation is needed and what must be available afterward. Data transfer, application setup and recovery work are agreed separately in the scope.
