What matters to your business

Reliable recovery objectives. Know which files and systems matter, where recoverable copies should live, and how recovery is tested.

Appropriate destinations. Evaluate local and offsite copies based on your requirements and the capabilities verified for your deployment.

Clear ownership. Define who checks backup results, who authorizes restores and what happens after a failure.

Questions your backup plan should answer

  • What is protected? Identify business files, shared folders and applications, and distinguish a file backup from a full system recovery method.
  • How much work could be lost? Set a target for the age of the data you would need to recover.
  • How long could recovery take? Consider the time needed to retrieve data, prepare replacement equipment and make applications usable.
  • Who checks the result? Assign responsibility for reviewing backup failures and recording restore tests.

Test a recovery task you actually need

A completed backup job is useful evidence, but a restore test answers a different question: can the required data be recovered and used? Agree on a representative file or recovery task, check the result and record any limitations. Test frequency and responsibilities belong in the service plan.

Keep access to backup accounts and recovery keys controlled. General inquiries should describe systems and recovery goals without including passwords or confidential records. Discuss recovery planning alongside ongoing IT maintenance so responsibilities are clear.
